Definition: A type of blood cell that is produced in the bone marrow and aids the body in fighting infections. These blood cells do not contain hemoglobin, a protein that gives red blood cells their color.
Also Known As: WBC, Leukocytes
Examples: Patients with leukemia often have higher than normal levels of white blood cells in their blood.
